Protect Your Oral Health with Regular Oral Exams

Oral exams are essential for detecting oral health problems such as gingivitis, tooth decay, and small cavities before they cause more serious problems. Several studies suggest a link between oral health and systemic diseases, indicating that gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Some symptoms of disease can be traced to oral health problems and should not be ignored. If you are not coming in for a comprehensive exam at least twice a year, you put yourself at risk of many oral and general health problems.

Frequency of Oral Exams

We recommend visiting the office for a check-up that includes an oral exam at least once every six months. This gives us a chance to detect any oral and create a treatment plan that will help you maintain optimal oral health.

If you have a history of gum disease, have dental implants or crowns, or at a high risk of developing periodontal disease, you may need to see us more frequently. You need to come in for an oral exam and teeth cleaning session for the following reasons:

  • Prevent gum disease

  • Maintain healthy teeth and gums

  • Achieve and maintain a brighter smile

  • Prevent bad breath (halitosis)

  • Maintain overall health

  • Maximize your dental insurance benefits

What to Expect During Your Oral Exam

• Review recent oral history and ask about any issues you are having

• Take X-rays and perform other diagnostic procedures

• Identify gum inflammation or bone loss

• Check for signs of periodontal disease

Tips for Taking Care of Your Oral Health

The American Dental Association recommends using products with an ADA seal, such as fluoride toothpaste, floss, oral irrigators, and other oral care products. We can recommend oral care products to complement your treatment program. Taking good care of your oral health between visits will reduce the risk of gum disease and a host of other oral health problems.
